Once a month I have the honor of teaching Bible study at Brenau University to their FCA group. It’s an awesome time to shed a little light on a college campus where tensions are high for student-athletes. They’re managing their schedules and classes, their practices and competitions, and honestly they’re juggling being 18-23 years old (and that is sometimes hard enough). When study was over and everyone was leaving, the daylight savings time-change got the best of me and it surprised me how dark it was. I walked across the parking lot and through the grass, watching my step using the faint light of a distant street lamp.
I couldn’t help but stop and take in what was on the ground in front of me. Peppering the ground in a classic autumn scene were fallen leaves, lit up by the faint light ahead. The leaves seemed to glow in the grass—the dying colors of spent life illuminated by light. All it took was a little light and the path to the car was bright.
PS—the picture doesn’t do justice to what I saw, so sorry it’s not as dramatic as it sounds, ha!

“You, Lord, are my lamp; the Lord turns my darkness into light.” —2 Samuel 22.29 NIV
David is praising God for delivering him from the murderous hands of King Saul. I find it interesting when I read David’s words how he describes the glory of God in his circumstances as a lamp. Not a sun, or a bonfire, but a lamp. All it takes for David is a lamp to defeat the darkness. As long as there is a little light we are able to get where we are going; we can see what we need; we can experience darkness turning into light.
Just a little light; it doesn’t take much.
The message is simple today: let the Lord be your light. Watch darkness flee when a spark is kindled into a flame that can guide you. Let God turn your darkness into light through the fire of His love.
