The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Nov 26, 2024 | Whit's End

Everyone has a moment (in one way or another) that says to them, “Now it is Christmas.” One of those moments for me is when I hear Andy Williams sing “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” But truthfully, I don’t feel it my heart until I pull out the Mikasa Nativity figures that my mother gave me years ago. They’ve been in every office I have ever had as a pastor. There’s just something so subtle about their detail and positions. For me personally, they powerfully yet humbly communicate that universe-altering moment when God came down.

This year I set them in the middle of the work table in my office, taking great care to position them just right so that I could see them from my desk, but also when I enter the room. Last Sunday,  I walked in and was taken aback. The sun was piercing the blinds in my widow, sending rays of sunshine outward, while being positioned over my prayer bench that houses my grandmother’s Bible. From my vantage point, it was like sun and God’s word were shining down on that small set of figurines, and I cried. Tears of joy, but I cried.

You just never know how it is that God is going to speak. He will get your attention through all manner of reminders and signposts.  My grandmother, Margaret, talks often about ‘nudges’, how God will bring important things to your attention (and that you BETTER respond).

This moment stopped me in my tracks and reminded me that it really is the most wonderful time of the year! Be sure that you, too, stop and give thanks for what reminds you of God’s goodness, of His gift of His Son for you and for me.
