When the wind speaks

Being two years old, my son Beau knows no strangers. He’s good at grabbing the attention of others, and not just because he’s cute. He finds everything around him interesting.

Monday, Beau and I were waiting for his sisters to finish up in a store when he looked down and found twigs from a tree scattered around the ground. He made a fast friend when he started picking them up and showing them to the little girl next to us in the plaza. He got so excited that she couldn’t help but start picking them up, too. They talked (in their own way) when a gust of wind blew through and knocked down more debris from the tree above.

Beau took up a handful of twigs and offered them up to the air from where they came. “Here, wind! Here, wind!” He said. The little girl said to him, “The wind can’t talk, silly.” But Beau persisted, “Here, wind! Here’s stick!” Hands outstretched toward the sky.

The girl didn’t see the wind the way Beau did. To him the wind is alive, moving and offering life. He saw what she couldn’t in that moment. It was precious, and given enough time and especially time with Beau, she may have come to see things like he did.

In ‭‭Acts‬ ‭5‬.32, Peter and John testify to all that they have seen in Jesus—things that the Jewish leaders of their day hadn’t seen. There were those who would come to experience Jesus as Lord and Savior, and some who didn’t. But the focus of the disciples was to witness to what they knew. What did they know? Well, what Beau knows, that the wind speaks.

“We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” (Acts‬ ‭5‬.32 NIV)

As those who know the Wind, the Spirit of God, let us witness to His words, His commands, His salvation, and His love. Let us offer up to God those things He gives us, even at the risk of seeming strange to those who don’t yet believe or know the Truth. Win them over; live your faith in front of them; tell them of His wonder and joy.
